Being in Business: The Sophomore Year
Year number TWO is officially in the books for MyLife Financial, LLC and boy was it quite the ride. There were times my faith was tested as well as my fortitude and I am pretty sure it will not be the last year it happens. But what can I say except that we survive only to thrive. So here is a recap of year number two and some of the things to come.
My Year In Review: The Sophomore Year
My Life: As most of my readers know by now, family is one of the things that I value the most. It drives a lot of the decisions I make personally as well as financially; especially at this point of my career being that I am a solo practitioner.
Valerie and I were thrown for a whirlwind on Oct. 9th, 2017. I was asleep on my comfortable couch from driving to Houston to catch a Houston Texans game that weekend. She woke me up with a voice mixed with emotions and said, "Babe, you have to get up and look at this!" As I gathered my thoughts and focused my vision, I looked at this tiny stick with lines on it. I knew then, EVERYTHING in my life was about to change.
I can sit here and tell you that I felt motivated to double down on building my business, but in all reality I was scared. I made a hasty decision to want to close down my business and pursuit a secure avenue of income so I wrote all my clients to start the process. I did not expect the responses to come. I was reminded of why I opened MyLife Financial to begin with, to help people.
Needless to say, they convinced me to stay open and keep grinding. Since then, Valerie and I have bought our first home, my boutique firm continues to grow and see progress, and as I type this my two month old daughter sleeps.
My Firm: MyLife Financial has seen a few changes since first starting. While I welcome anyone that needs financial questions answered with open arms, I realized I am only one man... for now. On the most basic level, MyLife Financial best serves people that have been in their profession for at least 5-10 years. I realized that a person who has worked for a company for at least five years, starts to ask more questions regarding personal finances. On a more niche level, I have found that we best serve individuals in the latter part of their career, are self-employed, and / or getting ready to retire.
What's funny about this realization is that, this was the group of people I was helping while practicing with my previous employer. I did not realize how much I enjoyed it.
My Friends: "No man is an island." I realize this is a famous quote by John Donne, but I heard it from a good friend, Christopher Wycoco. The saying is meant to express how as individuals we do poorly when isolated but when in a community, we thrive and I could not agree with it any more. This is why year two has brought me to realize that collaboration is key. MyLife Financial will be offering tax planning and preparation services via Wycotax Free E$timax. More details to come of course.
As a business owner helping serve small businesses and self-employed individuals, my partnerships will not stop there. I will continue to look for ways to better serve ALL of my clients.
My Projects: For those that have followed me for the past two years, I am an advocate of financial literacy and personal finance. While I have taken a 2 month hiatus from my projects for very good reason, I will resume with my podcast, Money & Life, with more topics to help answer questions in personal finance as well as continue to blog.
Last but not least, look out for announcements on workshops and seminars I will be conducting in the near future.
TO EVERYONE THAT HAS HELPED ME STAY IN BUSINESS, STAY MOTIVATED, AND KEEP GRINDING, THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. YOU ALL ARE THE BEST AND HELP ME MAKE YEAR THREE AN EVEN BIGGER SUCCESS!
Here's to Another Year and More!
